Why Word of Mouth Marketing Starts With Clarity, Not Great Service
Think about the last business you actually recommended to someone. Not liked on Instagram, not saved for later, genuinely told a friend about.
Now think about the ones you didn't, even though the service was probably fine too.
Here's the uncomfortable bit. It's rarely because one business was better than the other. It's because one of them was easier to talk about.
The one sentence test
When you recommended that business, I'd bet you explained it in one sentence. Maybe two. You didn't walk your friend through the full range of services, the founding story, and the mission statement. You said something like "they do X, and they're brilliant at it" and moved on.
That's the one sentence test, and most businesses fail it without ever realising. Not because they're bad at what they do. Because somewhere between "here's what we offer" and "here's how to describe us to a friend," the message got complicated.
I ask new clients to do this test on themselves fairly often. Explain your business in one sentence. Most people can't, not cleanly. They reach for three sentences, then apologise and try to condense it, then give up and say "it's a bit hard to explain, but basically..." If it's hard for the person who built the business to explain quickly, it's impossible for a customer trying to recommend it to a friend.
People share clarity, not complexity
Here's the thing about how recommendations actually spread. Nobody repeats a paragraph. People repeat a line.
If someone can't explain your business quickly, they won't explain it at all, not because they don't want to help you, but because it's genuinely awkward to try and fail mid-conversation. So they say something vague instead, "yeah they're good, you should check them out," and move on to the next topic. That's not a recommendation, that's a shrug.
Clear brand positioning isn't about being clever or catchy. It's about giving people something they can actually hold onto and hand off to someone else, intact, in one go.
Word of mouth starts with a repeatable message
Great service matters, obviously. But great service on its own doesn't spread. What spreads is a message people can repeat accurately, at a party, in a group chat, to a friend who just asked "does anyone know a good [whatever you do]?"
That message doesn't happen by accident. It comes from actually sitting down and working out your positioning properly, who you're for, what makes you different, and how to say it in a way a normal person would actually use.
Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.
This is exactly the gap our Brand Strategy Workshop is built to close. Two hours, one focused session, digging into your positioning, your audience, and your message, until you've got something people can genuinely repeat, not just something that reads well on your own website. You leave with it written down, ready to use, whatever you decide to do next.
Because the businesses that get talked about aren't always the best ones. They're just the ones that made it easy.
